Last Day of Lern and Serve Forever!! Dec 1st

Today is my last day of lern and serve forever! 100 hours complete! Today was exceptionly boring, the students were again on there own no work to do and just a free for all. Nicole was making out her list for chirstmas cards and i did some shopping online for my sister and neice everyone else is done! i went out on Black Friday.. We aslo google mapped some peoples houses for the christmas cards. I know that when i have my classroom i will have free time but not to the extent that she has for her students. i have learned a few things on how not to run a class. but Nicole tought me a few things that i can use, organization wise. The students were so wonderful adn well mannered. I am excited to move on to the next phase of my teaching credentials. now going really off toppic i found out this same day that my mom and dad are relocating to Charleston/ Mt. Plesant South Carolina. So i will be a southern belle. and hope to land a teaching job down there after i graduate, and see the difference between northern schools adn southern schools.

Learn and Serve Nov. 17th

This week was a very sad week for Lew - Port High School, Jonathan Miller, a Senior was in a fatal car accident on Sunday Nov. 16th. he struck a tree and was pronounced dead on the scene. I received the call from Nicole, the teacher that i am with. She told me what happened, and said that i shouldn't come to learn and serve this week. I understand that this is very dark and depressing time for the school and the student body; but someday I'll be a teacher with my own classroom and regrettably this is a reality and might happen to one of my students. I would like to know on how to deal with that, since there's no class on how to handel student death's. I am truly sorry for his families loss and I will keep Jonathan in my prayers and hope that you can do the same.

This week in class we started out writing stories on the smart boards. Every group had a bored and started the story. The main characters in our stories were characters from the play She Stoops to Conquer. My group had Ms. Neville and we started with her at a pub in Scotland where her car was broken in to. I noticed during this activity we as a whole (college kids) are all about alcohol and affairs from looking around at the other stories. After the exercise we then broke off in to groups to make either a movie trailer, Super bowl Ad or a story of a person. This exercise was so much fun! We had a blast making our trailer and editing and adding music. I have always wondered how to do that kind of stuff; it makes me want to throw my PC over the Queenston/Lewiston Bridge and get a Mac. For out next class I am looking forward to seeing the other videos, and the visit from the Opportunities Unlimited people.
I have spent quality time with an adult with a cognitive disability, well actually 2 adults. Both of my aunts on my dad’s side and my mom’s have a disability. My dad’s sister had Down syndrome; my mom’s sister has epilepsy and brain damage from lack of oxygen during birth. I never knew about my dad’s sister till I was about 12 we went to visit her a few times but we were young so it was limited; but she was an awesome artist , my one memories with her was our family outing to pizza hut for dinner. With my other aunt, it’s a different story. She acts so helpless and needy, my grandparents are basically her slaves, and she has the mentality of a 16 yr old. But she enjoys is when we take her out shopping. The last person that I know with a disability is Adam Arnone. We rode the bus together when we were younger. He went to BOCES and my sister and I went to St. Joes, both in Batavia. Adams Parents work with my dad at Attica Prison. Adams dad was a guard with my dad and his mom was a secretary. Adam was such a sweetheart he had downs also. I would sit with him on the bus and he would color and I would help him. He would kiss us on the cheek goodbye, one time we had this bus aid Peggy and she acted inappropriately with Adam. He was upset that Natalie my sister wasn’t able to sit with him so to shut him up she took her elbow to his head and shoved it against the window. When we got off at the bus to meet up with another bus Adams dad was there to pick him up. We told him what happened and needless to say Peggy was no longer our Aid.

Week 7 Learn and serve

This week at learn and serve I was able to go 2 days and rack up 10 hours. I am slowly getting up to my 100 hours. This week was a lot of drama. The teacher Nicole is a volleyball coach; she has an incident with two players and their parents. It led to a meeting with the superintendent, the parents, athletic director, and principle and of course Nicole. The school backed her 110% but the parents had 2 hours of ripping Nicole apart. So this week she was not at the top of her game. I helped out as much as I could. Graded papers and returned them. The keyboarding students were easy if the completed the assigned number of lines then they got full credit. The accounting students had worksheets to complete. The worksheet was on debits and credits and balancing accounts. If the numbers were right and the payments were also correct the students received full credit. The last class that Nicole teaches is CEIP not really sure what it stands for but it is an internship program. The students are assigned a company to intern for that relates to the field they choose and as the year goes on they have certain milestones they must meet; such as resume, goal statements , hour tracking , and a journal. This class the work is done at the internship or as homework. So during class they can play on the computers or work on other homework. The most popular site is the Polar Bowler game. Also this CEIP class also is responsible for razing money to keep the intern program running by selling pizza and pop for 1.50$

Class 7

Hallway Podcasting-

  • we had to go in the hall and record our podcast with our 5 pictures, i choose my pictures from my trip to South Carolina over the summer!

  • it was fun i liked it now i just have to upload it!!

  • To use it in the classroom it could help the visual learners and gives the students a break from the typical classrooms

  • It was difficult to get the podcast up and going but it was fun once i got to the right place

Blackboard-

  • For this activity we had to draw for pictures, i chose to do pumpkins for Halloween

  • then we had to name each drawing with a disability:Bulleted List learning disability, genetic disorder, emotional behavior disability, and intellectual and development disabilities.

  • We then had to list for -five aspects of that disorder

  • This activity again could engage the visual learners

She Stoops to conquer-

  • We had to go through the play and pick out some vocabulary terms

Class 8

What are the top three things you need to know when dealing with parents?

When dealing with the parents, you need to know a few things; such as, the student’s background and strengths, and their weakness, you also need to know the child’s level that there at. It helps if the teacher knows the background of the parents. If they are economically sound, race, education level. This could all help a teacher get the point across to the parents and let them know the status of their child’s learning.
The Teacher that I am with at Lew-Port has her teacher conferences coming up, November 17th. She mentioned that I am more than willing to sit in and experience it as long as the parents are ok with it. When my cousin had her very first teacher/parent conferences she crashed and burned horribly, when my sister and I let everyone know that we are going to be teachers the first thing our cousin did was tell us all her horror stories and the parent/teacher story. I just hope that I can bring all these things to the table when I graduate.

Lew-port 10/ 13 and class

This placement is going well, i like the teacher and love the class now that she is there every time i go! The students are all super nice to me but to each other the typical high school drama. The teacher has a lot of free time in her schedule; so i get to ask her about being a teacher and the ups and downs of the job. She also coaches the girls varsity volleyball team. so she has a lot of team stuff to do, so i help out and correct papers and homework for her. The keybording class she has 4th period are her only freshman. they worked on their typing and then tested their keyboarding skills, i tested my self and little rusty. Then on the free period the special ed teacher came in with 3 students. They have learning disorders. i belive the one had ADHD and another was just at a different level, so that was neat to see. i think its so neat when i see something at learn and serve or even just around at work or the mall that i can think hmmm i wonder whats wrong with that child or what gifts they have and i can then link it back to my feild i just feel professional and important. its a cool feeling!

Learn and Serve- Lew-Port Business 9-12

October 6, 2009

This is my seccond time at this placement, so far its not working out! the teacher has not been here both times. Last week i was sent home, this week i expliained to the princpale that i have to clock some hours and was allowed to stay. The sub was very nice answered allmy questions and took me on a tour of the school. He then explained the schedule to me, there are 9 periods and on tuesday its "Lew-Port Reads" the whole school (students) are required to read during the homeroom time (7:49-8:30) the book they are reading is Monster by Walter Dean Myers. Due to this reading time the rest of the classes are cut. The teacher i am with has several different class, all her classes except for keyboarding have a "free" day and are allowed to use the computers or other they can do other class work. The keyboarding class had to work on a unit, when they were finished they were able to play around on the computers. I hope this placement works out i like this school a lot.

Last week we went on a hike in the gorge. It was so much fun the scenery was gorgeous. The leaves were changing and the colors were amazing! As we left school we were crossing 104 and just went illegally and as were crossing some crazy man was beeping at us and gave us the finger! We continued to the beginning of the gorge. We started down the creepy old stairs and that was fun! We were walking sideways on the crooked staircase. When we got to the bottom we had mini lesson. And then continued on out venture, the leaves against the colors of the trees were so beautiful. The weather was so nice for us. When we got to the actual Devil’s hole we had another mini lesson and had to grab a rock. The rock represented the stress in our lives, and then we threw it in the water. It was so helpful. After we continued a few more feet we were able to spread out and not talk and just chill. It was so relaxing. Then we hiked up the stairs and headed to the professor’s house, where we had our last mini lesson and some yummy breakfast.

I loved this class it was different; we were able to get some fresh air and get out of the classroom and get out of the normal classroom. I hope that I can get my students out of the classroom and learn out in the real world.

EDu 239 Class 4 Ppt2

Class 4

1. How do we identify children with learning disabilities?

There are a few ways that these children are identified. The latest legislation to be passed and an option for schools is the RTI model, this also is known as IDEA 2004 (section 614)
The RTI model focuses on prereferral prevention and intervention and on recognizing the needs of students so that we can deliver appropriate supports and services through a collaborative approach (President's commission on Excellence in Special Education, 2002)
There are 4 aspects to this RTI model; Intervening Hierarchy, Evidence based interventions, Collaborative problem solving, Progress monitoring. Intervening Hierarchy consists of at least 3 tiers, the 1st tier is high-quality learning environment, the other tiers are designed to provide extra help for those who require it. Evidence based interventions is used to meet students' needs. This is sometimes called standard protocol. Collaborative problem solving involves a multidisciplinary team that is going to work together with the parents to design a plan that addresses the students needs. Lastly Progress monitoring, or the use of data on the students' achievements, performance and other needs to monitor the students progress.

2. Describe how the Information Processing Model is used to show the impact a learning disability can have on learning.

The Information-processing model or IPM is useful in helping us understand the impact that a learning disability can have on a student's ability to take in. think about, and share things that he/she is learning. This model has learning as a series of components that involve sensory stimulation/input, processing and thinking. IPM runs like blackboard, if everything is running together you get a well designed site, if there are glitches then.. well class is canceled! This is the same for the student if for example the student has a problem with processing or thinking then that can lead to memory problems as the source.

3. Is there one known primary cause of learning disabilities?

there is no proven cause of learning disabilities but its believed that it might be genetic issue. One suggestion to the cause of learning disabilities is genetic factors. Environmental factors play a role as well. Harmful substances are an example of environmental stressors, or for some it could be a Ford, as illustrated in my picture.

4. Define sensory memory, short-term memory, and long-term memory. How does each affects a student with learning disabilities?

· Sensory memory - The ability of being able to hold large amounts of information for a very short period of time.

· Short -term memory - An example of short term memory can be remembering the directions and different steps for solving a math problem and doing the calculation.

· Long -term memory - Stores information that we will use for

Any problem with these memory aspects can have a negative experience on learning, the student will struggle and produce poor grades.

Class 3

In what ways has social bias affected the achievement of girls with gifts?

This notion of social bias can be linked strongly to stereotyping. This is common among all girls not just the gifted ones. The female group as a whole is pressured to look a certain way. It’s hard enough to do it without being gifted, let alone being gifted. The girls that are gifted are shown to hide their gifts; they are then loosing an important part of themselves.

Define and discuss the concept of twice exceptional.
The term twice exceptional stands for children that have a disability but at the same time are gifted. For instance, an autistic child that can paint and, or sing extremely well.
Differentiated instruction

This is when the teacher takes another route to help the students learn, that helps them to process, construct, or make sense of ideas. Also developing teaching products so that all students within a classroom can learn effectively; regardless of differences in ability.

I think that this approach to learning can help students explore what kind of learner they are, if they are visual or oral. Also this can be used to accent the children with needs. A classroom teacher can use this in the way our class used it, with the baseball experiment. The class can all participate in the activity based on their ability and how well they can do something. The next trick for a new teacher would be incorporating it into the content of the class. For example my content is Business. I could have the students in a mock company running certain areas of the company, the accountant can be someone good in math. Then I am able to get to know my students and they can feel included and important.

This method can also incorporate the exceptional child and include them and help focus on their needs. The culturally diverse students in return can help add to the instruction with their own experiences.

Another way is with photography learning, this can help the visual learners in the classroom. The class can find objects that relate back to the Unit or lesson that is being taught.

Class 2

How did passage of PL94-142 place substantial pressure on public school systems?

The PL94-142 applied the pressure to the public school because it was backed by the government; the same people that provide the funding for the public schools. Some educators have resisted the legislation and “the burden that the new laws place on them” (Kirk Et al 2009).

Identify and briefly explain the six key principles of PL 94-142, the Education for All handicapped Children Act.

1. Zero reject- all children with disabilities must be provided a free appropriate education
2. Nondiscriminatory Evaluation – Each student must receive a full individualized examination before being placed in a special education program, with tests appropriate to the child’s cultural and linguistic background.
3. Individualized education program- an IEP must be written for every student with a disability who is receiving a special education
4. Least restrictive environment- as much as possible, children who have disabilities must be educated with children who are not handicapped.
5. Due Process- is a set of legal procedures that allow a fair trial or hearing
6. Parental participation- parents are to be included in the development of the IEP and access to the Childs records

Class 1

How do parents and siblings respond to the presence of a child with disabilities in the family?

This question hits close to home with my family, on both sides. My dad’s side had only one thing to do at the time and on my mom’s side they had many option and choose the wrong approach.
My dad’s side of the family there were 4 kids my dad the youngest and 3 sisters. The second youngest was my aunt Marcia; she was born a downs baby. In the 50’s the norm was to institutionalize the “handicap” children. So my aunt was put in to a home and my grandparents visited her and my dad on the other hand never knew about her until he was older. My aunts were close with Aunt Marcia and took her out and made her feel like a “normal” person. I meet Aunt Marcia once, we as a family took her to pizza hut when I was about 13 that’s my only memory with her, and she later died in 2005.
On my mom’s side there are 3 daughters, the youngest is Aunt Barbra who has epilepsy. As a child she was treated special, to the point that she can’t function for herself. Personally I believe she could if she wanted to but she has never had to do anything herself. She now is 40 lives at home with my grandparents and hasn’t had an episode in over 20 years, but her speech is impaired and she thinks like a 16 yr old. She has no life and sits in front of the TV all day long and as a very poor diet. She demands my grandma do things for her and even cleans her room. My aunt comes off as a nasty person but she is just spoiled because she has a disability. My mom, my sister and I often go over to hang out with her and take her out shopping or lunch to get her out but use her disability to get things.
Both sides are extreme opposites I feel that families should include the member with the disability but not help them to the point they can no longer do for themselves. For a family with a disability there has to be a middle ground where the disability is recognized but not ignored.

What is the ecological approach?

The Ecological approach is where we see the child with exceptionalities in complex interaction with many environmental forces. (Kirk et.al 2009)
This approach is when not only is the exceptional child taken in to consideration but also the way the community, or the family but also the environment.
