Last Day of Lern and Serve Forever!! Dec 1st

Today is my last day of lern and serve forever! 100 hours complete! Today was exceptionly boring, the students were again on there own no work to do and just a free for all. Nicole was making out her list for chirstmas cards and i did some shopping online for my sister and neice everyone else is done! i went out on Black Friday.. We aslo google mapped some peoples houses for the christmas cards. I know that when i have my classroom i will have free time but not to the extent that she has for her students. i have learned a few things on how not to run a class. but Nicole tought me a few things that i can use, organization wise. The students were so wonderful adn well mannered. I am excited to move on to the next phase of my teaching credentials. now going really off toppic i found out this same day that my mom and dad are relocating to Charleston/ Mt. Plesant South Carolina. So i will be a southern belle. and hope to land a teaching job down there after i graduate, and see the difference between northern schools adn southern schools.

Learn and Serve Nov. 17th

This week was a very sad week for Lew - Port High School, Jonathan Miller, a Senior was in a fatal car accident on Sunday Nov. 16th. he struck a tree and was pronounced dead on the scene. I received the call from Nicole, the teacher that i am with. She told me what happened, and said that i shouldn't come to learn and serve this week. I understand that this is very dark and depressing time for the school and the student body; but someday I'll be a teacher with my own classroom and regrettably this is a reality and might happen to one of my students. I would like to know on how to deal with that, since there's no class on how to handel student death's. I am truly sorry for his families loss and I will keep Jonathan in my prayers and hope that you can do the same.

This week in class we started out writing stories on the smart boards. Every group had a bored and started the story. The main characters in our stories were characters from the play She Stoops to Conquer. My group had Ms. Neville and we started with her at a pub in Scotland where her car was broken in to. I noticed during this activity we as a whole (college kids) are all about alcohol and affairs from looking around at the other stories. After the exercise we then broke off in to groups to make either a movie trailer, Super bowl Ad or a story of a person. This exercise was so much fun! We had a blast making our trailer and editing and adding music. I have always wondered how to do that kind of stuff; it makes me want to throw my PC over the Queenston/Lewiston Bridge and get a Mac. For out next class I am looking forward to seeing the other videos, and the visit from the Opportunities Unlimited people.
I have spent quality time with an adult with a cognitive disability, well actually 2 adults. Both of my aunts on my dad’s side and my mom’s have a disability. My dad’s sister had Down syndrome; my mom’s sister has epilepsy and brain damage from lack of oxygen during birth. I never knew about my dad’s sister till I was about 12 we went to visit her a few times but we were young so it was limited; but she was an awesome artist , my one memories with her was our family outing to pizza hut for dinner. With my other aunt, it’s a different story. She acts so helpless and needy, my grandparents are basically her slaves, and she has the mentality of a 16 yr old. But she enjoys is when we take her out shopping. The last person that I know with a disability is Adam Arnone. We rode the bus together when we were younger. He went to BOCES and my sister and I went to St. Joes, both in Batavia. Adams Parents work with my dad at Attica Prison. Adams dad was a guard with my dad and his mom was a secretary. Adam was such a sweetheart he had downs also. I would sit with him on the bus and he would color and I would help him. He would kiss us on the cheek goodbye, one time we had this bus aid Peggy and she acted inappropriately with Adam. He was upset that Natalie my sister wasn’t able to sit with him so to shut him up she took her elbow to his head and shoved it against the window. When we got off at the bus to meet up with another bus Adams dad was there to pick him up. We told him what happened and needless to say Peggy was no longer our Aid.

Week 7 Learn and serve

This week at learn and serve I was able to go 2 days and rack up 10 hours. I am slowly getting up to my 100 hours. This week was a lot of drama. The teacher Nicole is a volleyball coach; she has an incident with two players and their parents. It led to a meeting with the superintendent, the parents, athletic director, and principle and of course Nicole. The school backed her 110% but the parents had 2 hours of ripping Nicole apart. So this week she was not at the top of her game. I helped out as much as I could. Graded papers and returned them. The keyboarding students were easy if the completed the assigned number of lines then they got full credit. The accounting students had worksheets to complete. The worksheet was on debits and credits and balancing accounts. If the numbers were right and the payments were also correct the students received full credit. The last class that Nicole teaches is CEIP not really sure what it stands for but it is an internship program. The students are assigned a company to intern for that relates to the field they choose and as the year goes on they have certain milestones they must meet; such as resume, goal statements , hour tracking , and a journal. This class the work is done at the internship or as homework. So during class they can play on the computers or work on other homework. The most popular site is the Polar Bowler game. Also this CEIP class also is responsible for razing money to keep the intern program running by selling pizza and pop for 1.50$

Hallway Podcasting-

• we had to go in the hall and record our podcast with our 5 pictures, i choose my pictures from my trip to South Carolina over the summer!




• it was fun i liked it now i just have to upload it!!




• To use it in the classroom it could help the visual learners and gives the students a break from the typical classrooms




• It was difficult to get the podcast up and going but it was fun once i got to the right place

Blackboard-

• For this activity we had to draw for pictures, i chose to do pumpkins for Halloween



• then we had to name each drawing with a disability: learning disability, genetic disorder, emotional behavior disability, and intellectual and development disabilities.



• We then had to list for -five aspects of that disorder


• This activity again could engage the visual learners

What are the top three things you need to know when dealing with parents?


When dealing with the parents, you need to know a few things; such as, the student’s background and strengths, and their weakness, you also need to know the child’s level that there at. It helps if the teacher knows the background of the parents. If they are economically sound, race, education level. This could all help a teacher get the point across to the parents and let them know the status of their child’s learning.
The Teacher that I am with at Lew-Port has her teacher conferences coming up, November 17th. She mentioned that I am more than willing to sit in and experience it as long as the parents are ok with it. When my cousin had her very first teacher/parent conferences she crashed and burned horribly, when my sister and I let everyone know that we are going to be teachers the first thing our cousin did was tell us all her horror stories and the parent/teacher story. I just hope that I can bring all these things to the table when I graduate.

Lew-port 10/ 13 and class

This placement is going well, i like the teacher and love the class now that she is there every time i go! The students are all super nice to me but to each other the typical high school drama. The teacher has a lot of free time in her schedule; so i get to ask her about being a teacher and the ups and downs of the job. She also coaches the girls varsity volleyball team. so she has a lot of team stuff to do, so i help out and correct papers and homework for her. The keybording class she has 4th period are her only freshman. they worked on their typing and then tested their keyboarding skills, i tested my self and little rusty. Then on the free period the special ed teacher came in with 3 students. They have learning disorders. i belive the one had ADHD and another was just at a different level, so that was neat to see. i think its so neat when i see something at learn and serve or even just around at work or the mall that i can think hmmm i wonder whats wrong with that child or what gifts they have and i can then link it back to my feild i just feel professional and important. its a cool feeling!
